Best Strategies to Show Up in AI Search Results
Official Google, Bing, and OpenAI guidance plus the GEO practices that actually get you cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews.
Start with what the platforms actually document: be indexed, be snippet-eligible, publish people-first pages, keep structured data aligned with visible text, and let the right crawlers in. Google has no extra technical bar for AI Overviews. Then do the GEO work those docs do not cover — answer blocks, entity consistency, and earning mentions on pages models already cite.
As of August 2026, that order matters. Most "AI SEO strategy" lists invert it: hacks first, official guidance never.
Official Google: still SEO, then generative reporting
Google's AI features documentation is blunt. If the page can appear as a search result with a snippet, it can be used in AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no separate "AI index" you apply to join. The AI optimization guide repeats the same fundamentals: crawlable HTML, useful content, structured data that matches the page.
Practical implications:
- Do not block Googlebot in robots.txt to "keep content for humans." Googlebot is the crawl control for Search, including generative features.
- Do not treat schema as a cheat code. FAQ or HowTo markup that is invisible on the page is a mismatch, not a ranking lever.
- Use the Search Console control only as an opt-out. You can exclude a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode. That does not restore 2024 CTR; it removes generative impressions.
- Read the June 3, 2026 reports as presence, not strategy. Generative AI performance reports show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. The first version is impression-heavy; query/click coverage is limited. Confirm you appeared. Do not optimize weekly against incomplete click data.
The citation mix is why strategy cannot stop at "stay indexed." Promptwatch's July 2026 ChatGPT citation-types report has product pages at about 32.8% of ChatGPT citations and listicles at about 9.7% (product pages were about 18% in March). AI Overviews in the same month still cited listicles around 18% and product pages around 16.3%; product pages overtook listicles late July (17.9% vs 16.2%). Seer (through Feb 2026) saw AIO-present organic CTR recover toward ~2.4%, with cited brands earning ~120% more clicks per impression. Pew (2025): ~8% of AIO-present visits click organic vs ~15% without. Showing up in the answer is the strategy. Ranking next to it is the consolation prize.
Official Bing: IndexNow plus AI Performance
Bing's February 2026 AI Performance preview shows citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries. Submit URL changes with IndexNow so Microsoft surfaces recrawl on your schedule, not theirs. Then use the report the way you use GSC's generative report: presence and citation, not a vanity score.
If Copilot is a real channel for your buyers, this is the free layer. It will not tell you what ChatGPT or Perplexity said.
Official OpenAI: allow the citation bot
OpenAI's bot documentation splits the fleet:
- OAI-SearchBot — ChatGPT Search citations. Allow this if you want to be a source.
- GPTBot — training. Separate decision. Blocking GPTBot does not block SearchBot, and vice versa.
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Propagation is on the order of 24 hours. Verify against the IP list at openai.com/searchbot.json rather than guessing from log noise. If you blocked "all OpenAI" in 2024 during a training panic, you may have opted out of ChatGPT Search without noticing.
GEO practices that actually get you cited
Generative engine optimization is the layer on top of the official floor. Models do not "rank" your site. They generate an answer and sometimes attach sources. You show up by being the cleanest true paragraph or the third-party page they already trust.
1. Write answer blocks, not introductions. The first 40–80 words should be the claim a model can lift. Then evidence, then caveats in the same section so the lift includes the caveat. This is the same discipline as helpful content; it is just stricter about burying the lede.
2. Keep entity strings consistent. Product name, company name, pricing unit, category. If the docs say "Acme Analytics" and the blog says "Acme's AI tool," you are asking the model to merge identities. Match the Wikipedia / Crunchbase / vendor-nav string.
3. Make comparisons machine-liftable. Tables beat prose for "X vs Y" and "best for Z." Put units in the cells. Do not hide the losing column.
4. Earn mentions on pages models already cite. Run a losing prompt and list the sources. If the answer cites G2, a cloud marketplace, a university page, or a competitor's docs, that URL is the strategy, not another post on your blog. Digital PR and review programs are GEO when they target those domains.
5. Prefer primary sources over paraphrases. Pages that quote Google, Ahrefs, or a vendor changelog get reused. Pages that say "studies show" without a link do not.
6. Re-measure the prompt, not the session count. A strategy "worked" when the citation appears on the target prompt across engines. Sessions can still be down because Overviews compressed CTR. That is expected; see the 2026 traffic study.
None of this is a secret GPT ranking factor. We will not invent one. Google and OpenAI have not published one.
How you know a strategy worked
Search Console and Bing AI Performance cover Google and Microsoft generative surfaces. They do not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude, and GSC's generative report will not give you a clean before/after on a single prompt.
That is the measurement job. After you ship an answer block or land a mention on a cited third-party URL, you need a daily prompt check with evidence — Promptwatch tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, stores screenshots, and alerts in Slack or email, from $29/mo. It does not write content. Profound and Otterly compete in the same tracker class if you need enterprise workflow. Put the strategy's target prompts in the tool before you publish, so you have a baseline. Our ranking methodology is how we compare those products; the tools list is the menu.
Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Toolkit can corroborate brand-level movement. Use them as a second chart, not as the experiment log.
A 30-day sequence that respects the official docs
- Week 1 — Access. Confirm indexation, snippet eligibility, Googlebot allowed, OAI-SearchBot allowed, IndexNow on. Pull GSC generative impressions and Bing AI Performance.
- Week 1 — Baseline. 30–80 commercial prompts. Screenshot citation status.
- Week 2 — Extractability. Answer blocks and tables on the pages that map to uncited money prompts (prioritization).
- Week 3 — Third-party. Pitch or update the two domains that already appear as sources on your losing prompts.
- Week 4 — Re-measure. Same prompts, same engines. Keep the change if citations moved. Do not declare victory from a traffic uptick on branded queries alone.
FAQ
Does schema get us into AI Overviews?
Only as a clearer representation of visible content. Google's docs require structured data to match the page. Invisible FAQ markup is not a strategy.
Should we block Googlebot or GPTBot to protect original research?
Blocking Googlebot removes you from Search, including Overviews. GPTBot is training; OAI-SearchBot is citations. Make those decisions separately. Most commercial sites should allow Googlebot and SearchBot.
Is being #1 organic enough to get cited?
No. Ranking #1 organic and getting cited are different outcomes. Promptwatch's March 2026 ChatGPT citation drop (GPT-5.3, about 6.4 sources per search response down to about 4.7-4.9, ~27% fewer) is why a blue-link win is not a citation win. Seer's cited-brand click lift is the reason to optimize for the answer, not only the blue link.
Do we need a different site for ChatGPT vs Google?
No. One crawlable, people-first site. Different bots, same pages. Engine-specific hacks rot. Measurement should be engine-specific; content usually should not.
What to do this week
- Read Google's AI features page and fix anything that is not indexed or snippet-eligible.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot; confirm IndexNow; glance at Bing AI Performance.
- Baseline 40 money prompts. If you need a tracker, start at Promptwatch or compare alternatives on the tools list.
- Ship answer blocks on the five uncited commercial URLs. Do not start a 40-post calendar.
- Re-check those five prompts in 14 days. Keep what moved the citation; kill what only added word count.
