Best Prompt Tracking Tools for Monitoring AI Trends
The prompt tracking that matters for AI search is a daily portfolio of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and AI Overviews.
The prompt tracking that matters for AI search is a daily portfolio of the questions buyers type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, plus a record of who got cited. Trends here mean comparison queries in your category shifted toward a competitor last week, or a product page stopped showing up as a source.
Public data is the market-level layer. A tracker is how you see the same movement on your prompts.
The public trend layer
Public citation data covers 26B+ analyzed citations, prompts, and responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. That corpus is the closest thing to an industry trend feed that is not a vendor pitch deck.
Three reports from 2026 are enough to explain why a frozen prompt list beats anecdotal ChatGPT sessions:
- ChatGPT citation drop: around the GPT-5.3 rollout on March 4, 2026, average sources per search-enabled ChatGPT response fell from about 6.4 to about 4.7-4.9, roughly 27% fewer slots.
- ChatGPT citation types, July 2026: product pages were about 32.8% of ChatGPT Search citations (roughly 33%), nearly double the March share of about 18%. Listicles were about 9.7%.
- AI Overviews citation types, July 2026: listicles averaged about 18% in July and product pages about 16.3%. Product pages overtook listicles as the most-cited format from July 28 on, ending at 17.9% versus 16.2% for listicles. Listicles had been about 26% in Q1.
On August 8, 2026, ChatGPT site: fanouts jumped from 0.37% of fanouts to 16.8%, and average searches per response went from about 1.08 to about 1.83. Retrieval behavior can change in a day. A monthly brand score will not catch that.
Those reports describe the market. They do not tell you whether your comparison page is still in the answer. That is generative engine optimization measurement: a prompt portfolio you own, re-run on a schedule.
What a GEO prompt tracker actually stores
You maintain a list: "best X for Y," "X vs Z," unbranded jobs. A tracker re-runs them on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, and stores what happened. Trends are time series on that portfolio (share of voice, new competitors, lost citations), not a blended "AI visibility" score.
Google will not give you the portfolio. AI features means indexed and snippet-eligible. AI optimization means crawlable, useful, matching schema. Generative AI performance reports are impression-heavy Google surfaces with a weak query layer in v1. Bing AI Performance covers Copilot and Bing summaries. OAI-SearchBot must be allowed for ChatGPT Search citations. All necessary. None is a prompt-portfolio product.
Best tools for your brand's prompts
Peec. Cleanest prompt-level GEO UX, screenshots, daily. $95+ and model add-ons. Trends start at subscribe (no backfill). Monitoring only.
Otterly. Easy portfolio setup. Weekly-ish data. 15 prompts on Lite. Trends will look smoother than reality because the refresh is slow.
Profound. Deepest enterprise prompt dataset (Prompt Volumes) and the most engines on the top tier. Trends here can include estimated query demand, not only your list. Price and staffing are enterprise. Starter's ChatGPT-only 50 prompts is not a market-trend system.
Semrush AI Toolkit / Ahrefs Brand Radar. Huge modeled prompt corpora. Useful as research for "what might people ask." Weak as operational tracking: generated or keyword-derived prompts, not your confirmed list; Ahrefs chatbot indexes are roughly monthly; Brand Radar has a documented ChatGPT undercount. Use them to discover prompts. Track the keepers elsewhere.
Scrunch. Prompt credits burn per engine; weekly monitoring. Buy for crawler-side serving, not as the trend database.
After the Google and Bing layers, the GEO prompt tracker we default to next to Peec and Otterly ($29/mo, six engines daily, screenshots, alerts, competitor share of voice, no writer) is Promptwatch. The split is also how we rank GEO tools on the full list: coverage and evidence on live AI search answers, not a research index you glance at once a quarter.
How to monitor AI search trends without lying to yourself
- Freeze a portfolio (25-100 prompts). Changing the list every week destroys the trend.
- Tag prompts (branded / comparison / category). Trends differ by tag.
- Daily beats weekly for "what changed." Weekly is fine for quarterly strategy if you accept lag.
- Screenshot the answer. A visibility % without the text cannot explain a reputational trend.
- Overlay 3-5 competitors on the same prompts. A rising SOV you cannot attribute is a vanity trend.
Do not invent ranking factors to explain a GEO trend ("we added llms.txt so ChatGPT loves us"). Correlate: crawl allowed, page extractable, citation appeared. Google has not published a factor list. Neither has OpenAI.
When a trend line breaks, check the public reports before you rewrite the site. A slot squeeze on ChatGPT, a format shift toward product pages, or a jump in site: fanouts can move many brands at once. Your tracker tells you whether you were one of them.
FAQ
What's the cheapest way to track market prompt trends?
A $29/mo daily GEO tracker on a frozen list, plus free GSC/Bing generative reports. Manual weekly spreadsheets work until they don't.
Why not Ahrefs' hundreds of millions of prompts?
Breadth for research. Modeled from Google keywords, not conversational logs, and not a substitute for your money prompts logged daily.
Can Search Console replace a prompt tracker?
It replaces the Google-impression question. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or a prompt time series with competitor sources.
Do I need the public data reports and a tracker?
The reports tell you how engines are citing the web. The tracker tells you how they cite you. Use both. The hub is free; the portfolio is the paid job.
What to do this week
- Export 40 prompts from Search Console queries and sales calls. Freeze them.
- Confirm OAI-SearchBot, GSC generative reports, and Bing AI Performance.
- Skim the citation-type and citation-drop reports so you know what "trend" means this quarter.
- Put the 40 prompts in a GEO tracker with daily screenshots. Compare Peec, Otterly, Profound, and Promptwatch on engines, cadence, and evidence.
