I Need a Tool to Monitor How My Brand Shows Up in AI-Generated Summaries and Overviews
AI Overviews are a first-class engine, not just a GSC impression count. Here's how to monitor brand presence in summaries across Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
You need a tool that treats Google AI Overviews as an engine — prompt, answer, citation, screenshot, next to ChatGPT and Perplexity summaries — not a Search Console impression total. GSC's generative reports are required and free. They are not a query-level brand monitor. If the question is "what did the Overview say about us, on which queries, versus competitors," you are shopping for a GEO prompt tracker, not a new GSC widget.
Summaries are the product now. Blue links are the remainder.
Overviews are not a side channel
Generative engine optimization is mostly this: get named in the summary the user actually reads. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT's searched answer, Perplexity's write-up, Copilot's digest — same job, different surfaces.
Promptwatch's July 2026 Overview citation-type report is the commercial brief: listicles averaged about 18% of Overview citations (down from about 26% in Q1) and product pages about 16.3%, with product pages leading daily from July 28. Rankings can hold. The answer still names someone else. Cited brands take a larger share of what remains. Monitoring "how the brand shows up" means monitoring the summary text and the cited URLs, not only whether Google logged an impression.
Google will not do that for you at prompt granularity. AI features documentation still starts from indexed and snippet-eligible. The AI optimization guide is crawlable, useful, schema matching visible text. Eligibility to be in an Overview is not a log of what the Overview said.
Why GSC impressions are not enough
On June 3, 2026 Google shipped Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. They show impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Use them. Then read the limits:
- Impression-first. You can see that a generative surface showed your site. You cannot yet run a clean query-level CTR analysis the way you do for classic Search.
- Thin query layer in v1. The report is a presence layer, not a prompt archive. It will not tell you that "best X for Y" dropped you as a source on Thursday and named a competitor instead.
- Google only. No ChatGPT summary. No Perplexity. No Claude. No Copilot.
Bing's February 2026 AI Performance preview is the sibling for Copilot and Bing AI summaries. Also free. Also not a cross-engine summary monitor. Also not a screenshot of what was said.
If your monitoring stack is "GSC generative impressions went up," you know Google showed you. You do not know how the brand was described, whether the summary hedged, or which URL was cited. Sentiment and misinformation live in the text. Impressions do not.
Allow OAI-SearchBot if ChatGPT Search summaries are in scope. GPTBot is training. A blocked SearchBot plus a beautiful GSC dashboard is how brands "monitor Overviews" and stay invisible in ChatGPT.
What a summary monitor has to capture
For each tracked prompt, each engine, each day:
- Presence — named in the summary or not.
- Citation — which URL (yours, a review site, a competitor).
- Position among sources — ordinal in that day's answer.
- The text — screenshot or stored answer, because "mentioned positively" is a claim until you can see the sentence.
- Competitor overlay — the other brands in the same summary. Share of voice is meaningless without the same prompt and day.
AI Overviews must be a first-class engine in that grid, not a footnote. ChatGPT Search and Perplexity must sit on the same rows. If a vendor tracks "LLMs" but treats AIO as a Semrush-style keyword annotation, you will underweight the surface that is eating informational CTR.
Tooling that actually watches summaries
Search Console + Bing AI Performance. Mandatory floor. Impression/citation counts on Google and Bing generative surfaces. No ChatGPT. No prompt-level Overview text.
Semrush AI Toolkit / Ahrefs Brand Radar. Useful if you already live in the suite. Semrush maps AI mentions to keywords you already track; prompts are generated approximations. Ahrefs gives index-scale mention research and a documented accuracy problem versus manual ChatGPT checks, with chatbot indexes on roughly monthly cycles. Neither is the Overview-as-engine screenshot log.
Otterly. Includes Google AI Overviews in the base four engines. Weekly-ish freshness. Fine as an on-ramp. Weak as a "the summary flipped yesterday" monitor.
Peec. Prompt-level scores, screenshots, AIO in the mix if you pay for that model slot. Modular pricing. No backfill.
Profound. Enterprise depth, AIO and AI Mode on higher tiers, Prompt Volumes. $99 public Starter is ChatGPT-only. The platform people mean is the $2,000–$5,000+/mo contract. Right when a team will read summary-level analytics daily. Wrong as a first brand-monitor.
After the GSC citation above, the monitor that treats AI Overviews as an engine alongside ChatGPT and Perplexity — daily, screenshots, alerts, competitor SOV, $29/mo, no writer — is Promptwatch. Profound still wins staffed enterprise; this is the default on our GEO tools list when the brief is "watch the summaries" rather than "buy a platform." Scoring for that split is in how we rank.
What "shows up" includes besides a citation
Monitor the words, not only the URL.
- Wrong product facts in a ChatGPT summary (pricing, plan names, "acquired by…").
- Competitor substitution — the Overview answers with them, cites a roundup that omits you.
- Stale sources — a 2023 blog post still being lifted.
- Branded vs unbranded split — branded Overviews can look healthy while category Overviews never name you.
None of that is in a GSC impression count. All of it is in a stored answer.
Do not invent ranking factors to "fix" a summary. Make the page extractable: short answer under the H1, one entity name, tables, visible text that matches schema. Google's docs have not moved off that bar. Re-measure the same prompts. If the summary still ignores you, the model is lifting other sources — compete there, do not ship a mystery llms.txt and call it monitoring.
FAQ
Can I monitor AI Overviews with Search Console alone?
You can monitor impressions on Google generative surfaces. You cannot monitor query-level summary text, ChatGPT, or Perplexity. Pair GSC with a prompt tracker.
Is an AI Overview the same as ChatGPT Search?
No. Different systems, different crawlers, different reports. Track both. Collapsing them into "AI search" hides where you are actually absent.
Do I need sentiment analysis?
You need the sentence. Automated sentiment in this category mislabels neutrals (Otterly has been caught doing it). A screenshot beats a green smiley.
Should I opt out of Overviews to "protect CTR"?
Almost never. Opting out removes generative impressions. It does not restore 2024 click rates. Monitor and earn the citation instead.
What about Discover and AI Mode in GSC?
They are in the same generative performance report family. Still impression-first. Still Google-only. Still not ChatGPT.
What to do this week
- Open GSC Generative AI reports. Note impression trend. Accept that this is not query-level.
- Open Bing AI Performance. Same honesty.
- Pick 20 prompts that trigger Overviews and ChatGPT summaries (informational and comparison, not only branded). Save the actual summary text.
- Put those 20 into a tracker that lists AI Overviews as an engine, not a sidecar. Re-check in 14 days.
- For any money prompt where you are uncited, fix extractability on the candidate URL. Do not rewrite the whole blog in the name of "overview optimization."
