Is There a Tool That Shows When ChatGPT Cites My Website in Its Responses?

OpenAI does not offer a "ChatGPT cited you" dashboard. Citation tracking is a third-party GEO category — here's what actually works.

OpenAI does not offer a dashboard that emails you when ChatGPT cites your website. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT citations. The official surface is bot documentation — OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search crawling — not a citation log. If you want to know when your URL appears in answers, you buy a third-party GEO tracker and you run a prompt portfolio. Referrals in analytics are not that log.

This is the whole category. Anyone selling "we are the official ChatGPT citation report" is overselling. Anyone telling you to watch chatgpt.com referral traffic and call it a citation feed is measuring leftover clicks, not mentions.

What OpenAI actually gives you

Read the bots documentation before you buy anything.

  • OAI-SearchBot crawls pages that may be used as sources in ChatGPT Search. Allow it if you want to be eligible for those citations. Robots.txt changes can take around 24 hours to propagate. OpenAI publishes an IP list for the search bot.
  • GPTBot is training data, not Search citations. Blocking GPTBot does not mean ChatGPT Search cannot cite you, and allowing GPTBot does not mean you will be cited.
  • There is no publisher console that lists which prompts used your URL, how often, or when you were dropped.

That is the official story. Eligibility is crawl access plus a page the product can use. Measurement is on you.

Google is more generous on its surfaces. Generative AI performance reports show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing's AI Performance shows Copilot citations. Neither is ChatGPT. Do not file a ChatGPT question under GSC and call it done.

Referrals are not citations

chatgpt.com / chat.openai.com in GA4 means someone clicked through. Most ChatGPT answers do not produce a click. You can be cited and see nothing in analytics. You can see a referral from a browsing session that never used your URL as a cited source in the sense you care about.

Treat ChatGPT referrals as a bonus channel. Promptwatch's public dataset covers 26B+ citations, prompts, and responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews — most of those answers never show up as a chatgpt.com session. Useful. Incomplete. Not a citation log.

Server logs showing OAI-SearchBot hits are also not citations. They are crawl events. Lots of crawled pages are never named.

What a working ChatGPT citation tool actually does

A GEO tracker does not hook OpenAI's private logs. It asks the product the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and records the answer.

Minimum viable:

  • Your prompts, not a generic industry list you cannot map to revenue.
  • ChatGPT Search / the consumer answer, not only an API completion with no browsing.
  • Daily cadence. Citations flip. Weekly is how you explain a loss a month late.
  • Screenshot or stored HTML of the answer. "72% visibility" without the picture will not survive a skeptical founder.
  • Cited URL extraction. Named-without-link is a different status than a source card.
  • Competitor overlay. You need to know who got the slot.

That is generative engine optimization measurement applied to one engine. You should still run the same prompts on Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and AI Overviews, because buyers do not live in one chat window. But if the question is strictly ChatGPT, do not accept a tool that only samples API text.

After you have allowed OAI-SearchBot and confirmed it in logs, you still cannot see which prompts cite you. Profound will sell you that log at enterprise prices. Otterly and other SMB trackers cover ChatGPT with less evidence. Promptwatch sits next to them as the screenshot-backed daily option — ChatGPT plus five other engines, alerts, competitor SOV, from $29/mo, no writer in the loop.

Manual checks do not scale, but they calibrate

Do a manual pass before you trust a vendor:

  1. Use a logged-out or clean profile when possible.
  2. Run 15 money prompts in ChatGPT Search.
  3. Record mention, citation, URL, and a screenshot.
  4. Compare that sheet to the trial dashboard on the same day.

If the tool's ChatGPT column disagrees with your eyes on more than a couple of prompts, you have a sampling or product-surface problem. Our ranking notes ding tools whose numbers cannot be verified. Directional data is fine if the vendor says so. "Exact citation monitoring" that fails a spot-check is not.

Allow the bot, then measure the answer

Technical hygiene is short:

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt if you want ChatGPT Search eligibility. See OpenAI's bot docs.
  • Do not confuse that with GPTBot policy.
  • Keep the claims you want cited in visible HTML, not only in images or gated PDFs. Google's AI optimization advice is the same idea on their side: crawlable text, useful pages, structured data that matches what humans see.
  • Then measure. Crawl access without a prompt log is hope.

If legal wants to block training but allow Search, that split is exactly why the two bots exist. Document it. Do not let a blanket "block all OpenAI" rule silently kill Search eligibility.

What about custom GPTs, memory, and "I asked it and it knew us"?

Irrelevant to the buying question. A custom GPT you built will cite your files because you put them there. A logged-in session with memory will repeat your brand because you talked about it. Neither is "ChatGPT cites our website in the wild."

The tool you want is tracking the default, repeatable, dated answer to a prompt a stranger would type. If your vendor cannot say how they handle login and memory, ask before you sign.

FAQ

Does OpenAI notify publishers when they are cited?

No. Not as of August 2026. Watch the bots documentation for crawl rules. Buy a tracker for citations.

Can I use the OpenAI API usage dashboard for this?

No. That dashboard is your API spend. It has nothing to do with whether ChatGPT Search named your domain.

We see ChatGPT referrals — isn't that enough?

It proves some users clicked. It does not list prompts, does not catch citings without clicks, and does not show competitors. Keep the channel. Add a citation log.

Not by design. Search uses OAI-SearchBot. Read the official bot list and configure them separately.

Is a ChatGPT-only tracker enough?

Only if your buyers live in ChatGPT. Most do not. The same prompt set should run on Perplexity and Gemini at least. See the tools list for six-engine coverage.

What to do this week

  1. Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Allow Search if you want citations. Document the training decision separately.
  2. Confirm OAI-SearchBot in logs. If it never appears, you have a crawl problem, not a tracker problem.
  3. Run 15 revenue prompts in ChatGPT Search. Save screenshots and cited URLs.
  4. Ignore ChatGPT referral totals as your KPI for this project.
  5. Put those 15 prompts on a daily, screenshot-backed tracker. Compare options in our GEO tools list and how we rank. Re-check the same prompts in 14 days after any extractability fixes.
